Bennison, 1989 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Martin Loop of Washington County, NY Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1990] Martin LOOP [Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the first child of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP He was born in 1763, and was christened June 4, 1763 at the reformed church in Albany. He married, September 29, 1782, Mary HULL at Schagticoke. She was born about October 27, 1761, based on the age given in her tombstone inscription. Their first two or three children were born in Schagticoke, but sometime between 1784 and 1788 they moved to Washington county, perhaps settling first in Hebron, but ending up in Lake Luzerne (then called Fairfield). Between 1800 and 1810 they moved to Oneida County, NY. Martin died there between the 1810 census in which he is enumerated, and the 1820 census in which "Widow Mary Loope" is censused in Otsego County. According to family tradition he worked as a stone mason on the Erie Canal, which was built between 1817 and 1825. This tradition fits well with his residence in Oneida county. Mary Loop died June 13, 1846, in Otsego, Otsego county, at the home of her son-in-law, Buckingham Fitch, and is buried at the Fitch Cemetery in Fly Creek. Their children: 1. Mary LOOP, christened January 12, 1783, at Schaghticoke, Rensselaer, NY, probably d. young. 2. Nelly LOOP, christened February 2, 1784, at Schaghticoke, Rensselaer, NY, probably d. young. + 3. David LOOP, b. about 1786, probably in Washington County, NY, m. (1) Sally FLETCHER, m. (2) Almira or Pricilla BELCHER. He d. December 30, 1869, in St. Lawrence County, NY. 4. Hannah LOOP, b. about 1788, at Hebron, Washington, NY, m. Isaac HOLCOMBE, they lived in Vermont, then Saratoga, NY, then near Randolph, Dodge, Wisconsin, where they are both buried. 5. Rachel LOOP [?], b. about 1790, d. young. 6. Mary LOOP [?], b. about 1792, d. young. 7. Rebecca LOOP [?], b. about 1794, d. young. + 8. John Lawrence LOOP, b. September 22, 1795, at Fairfield (now Lake Luzerne), Washington, NY, m. (1) about 1816 at Solon, NY, Anne WARD (they had eight children), m. (2) November 24, 1853, at Rubicon, Dodge, Wisconsin, Mrs. Naomi BARLOW, a widow (they had one child), d. June 19, 1883 at Eureka, Winnebago, WI. 9. Anna LOOP, b. about 1797 in Washington County, NY, m. October 8, 1818, Benjamin BUTMAN. They had a daughter, Mary BUTMAN, who was born about 1819, married Benjamin JACKSON in 1874, and another daughter Deborah BUTMAN who was born about 1819 and died unmarried in 1843. They may have had other children. 10. LaFayetta LOOP, b. about 1799 in Washington County, NY, m. April 13, 1826, Romeo BOWEN. They lived in Cooperstown, NY, he d. at Afton, Chenango, NY, September 4, 1868. They had a son Lorenzo BOWEN born about 1839 and died in 1852. 11. Asenath LOOP, b. about 1803 in Washington County, NY, m. at Otsego, November 18, 1844, Buckingham FITCH, his first wife having died the previous May. Asenath d. before February 26, 1866, as that is when his third wife died. He d. at Otsego, July 7, 1868. 12. Deborah LOOP, b. about 1805 in Washington County, NY, m. Anson ROCKWELL, perhaps the Anson ROCKWELL who d. April 23, 1861 at Otsego, aged 78, though this would make him 22 year older than she. 13. ______ LOOP, a male, b. between 1805 and 1810, d. young. David LOOP [Martin(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the third child of Martin LOOP and Mary HULL. There is no primary source data to prove either that the David LOOP of St. Lawrence County was the son of Martin and Mary, or that Martin and Mary had a son David. Assuming for the moment that he was, there is confusion as to his date of birth. The 1800, 1810, and 1830 census records indicate he was born after 1785. The 1850 census puts his date of birth as about 1784. The 1860 census puts the date as about 1780. His tombstone inscription puts the date as about 1779. He was probably born in Washington County after the family had moved there from Schagticoke about 1785. The 1790 and 1800 Washington County census records for Martin Loop and the 1810 Oneida County census records for "M. Loop" and "D. Loop" (who live next door to each other in that census) match each other perfectly and also match known facts about Martin Loop's family. This of course does not prove that D. Loop is David Loop or that David Loop is a son of Martin Loop. It does, however, make it seem very likely that both are true. David LOOP of Oneida County disappears from Oneida County after the 1810 census, and David LOOP of St. Lawrence County first shows up there in the 1820 census. David LOOP married Sally FLETCHER before 1810. She was born about 1786 in Troy, Rensselaer, New York. In the 1810 census of Oneida county they have a daughter under five years old. This daughter apparently died young. Between 1810 and 1811 they moved to St. Lawrence County where the rest of their children were born. They are censused in Russell in 1820, and are probably in the same town in 1830, though the census that year does not give the town. About 1835, David LOOP of St. Lawrence County moved to Lenox Township in Madison County, bringing with him the younger children and leaving behind at least his son Vanransler. Lenox Township is on the border with Oneida County. The Erie Canal, on which David's father is supposed to have worked, runs through the township. David's son David P. LOOP was married in Lenox in 1839. In the newspaper report of the marriage in 1842 of David's daughter Orpha Maria LOOP she is listed as being "of Lenox". David's daughter Sylvia died in the village of Oneida (which is in Lenox) in 1903, which most likely means she married while the family was in the area and never moved away. Probably after all their children had left home, sometime between 1842 and 1844, David LOOP and his wife moved back to St. Lawrence County probably to be near his older sons already established there. There his first wife Sally died August 25, 1844. By 1850, David LOOP had remarried to a woman named Almira, born around 1801 in New York State. They were censused in Russell in 1850 and 1860. Ted Loop says the second wife's name was Pricilla BELCHER, but her name is shown as Almira in both census records. They apparently had no children. David LOOP died December 30, 1869, in Russell. He and his first wife are both buried in the Belleville Cemetery in Russell. During his life David LOOP was a farmer and a laborer. He was never a doctor as family myth suggests. The children of David LOOP and Sally (FLETCHER) LOOP were: 1. ______ LOOP, a girl under 5 in 1810, probably d. young. + 2. Jeremiah LOOP, b. November 8, 1811/2, probably in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY, m. September 28, 1836, in St. Lawrence County, Elizabeth (Betsy) DYGERT. He d. October 30, 1866, at Russell, NY. She d. February 11, 1880, at Omro, Winnebago, Wisconsin, where she is buried. + 3. Vanransler LOOP, b. September 15, 1813, in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY, m. (1) about 1837, Clarissa COLLISTER. Clarissa d. March 7, 1870. He m. (2) about 1870 Susan Wooley DYGERT. He died January 4, 1896 in Edwards, NY. + 4. Russell A. LOOP, b. He was killed in combat at Shepardstown, Jefferson, West Virginia August 24, 1864. He is buried in the Rural Cemetery, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, NY. She d. February 5, 1911, at Mason City, Gordo, IA. 6. Sylvia Priscilla LOOP, b. January 18, 1820, in Russell, St. Lawrence County, NY, m. November 27, 1838, Jonathan Robert DYGERT, the son of Henry P. and Maria DYGERT. He was b. August 1812 or 1813 in Montgomery County, NY, and d. May 30, 1892, in Oneida, Madison, NY. She d. Sarah (Sally) LOOP, (twin of Charles?) b. November 3, 1828, in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY, m. February 27, 1851, in Bureau County, IL, Alanson BENSON. He was born February 27, 1823, in Douglas, Worcester County, MA, the son of Alanson BENSON and Lydia BAIRBANKS. They had children: Alanson BENSON III, Lucinda BENSON, and Clara BENSON. She d. after 1889 at Tiskilwa, Bureau, IL. John Lawrence LOOP [Martin(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the eighth child of Martin LOOP and Mary HULL. He was born September 22, 1795, in Fairfield (now Lake Luzerne) Washington, NY. He moved with his parents to Oneida County between 1800 and 1810. About 1816, in Solon, Cortland, NY, he married his first wife Anne WARD. She was born August 30, 1797 in New York State, the daughter of David WARD and Violetta (GILLET) WARD. They are censused in Solon in 1820 and 1830. They were still in Solon in 1835. In 1839, however, John Loop "of Cattaraugus county" bought land in Cattaraugus County, implying they had already moved there. They are censused there in 1840. In 1845, John and Anna Loop of Dayton, Cattaraugus county bought more land in the county. Shortly thereafter they moved to Wisconsin where Anna died near 1845. In 1850 John LOOP is censused in the town of Hubbard, Dodge County, Wisconsin, his younger children living with him and his sons Asahel and David living next door with their families. On November 24, 1853, John married his second wife, Naomi, who was the widow of a man named BARLOW. They were married in Rubicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin. In 1857, "John Loop and his wife Anna of Wheatland, Kenosha county, Wisconsin" sell land in Dayton to their son Asahel Loop and his wife Cordelia. This was either an error or a legal shortcut, as Anna had been dead for over ten years at that time. John and Naomi moved to Richardson County, Nebraska, between 1857 and 1860. We do not know when Naomi died. John died July 19, 1883, in Eureka, Winnebago, Wisconsin, probably while living with his son Truman Ellis LOOP. Children of John and Anna (WARD) LOOP: 1. Mary Ann LOOP, b. July 13, 1817, at Solon, Cortland, NY, m. about 1837, Hiram WARD, d. after 1850 and is buried at Marengo, McHenry, IL. 2. Hannah L. LOOP, b. Ezra LOOP, b. about 1858 in Wisconsin. Jeremiah LOOP [David(7), Martin(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the second child of David LOOP and Sally FLETCHER. He was born November 8, 1811. He may have been born in Oneida County before his parents moved to St. Lawrence County. Omer Loop says the move occurred in 1812. Many claim he was born in Russell in St. Lawrence County where he grew up. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) DYGERT on September 38, 1836 in Russell. This was after his father had already moved to Madison with much of the rest of the family. Elizabeth DYGERT was born May 10, 1812, in DeKalb, St. Lawrence, New York. All but one of their children were born in Russell. The exception was the second child, born in Lenox, Madison County, probably while they were visiting Jeremiah's parents. We have not found Jeremiah yet in the 1840 census, but he is censused in 1850 in Russell with his wife and and eight of his children, living near his father (who had by that time moved back) and some of his brothers. He was a farmer. He died in Russell on October 30, 1866, and is buried there in the Knox Cemetery. His widow moved to Wisconsin, probably to live with her daughter Mary (LOOP) BARNETT. There she died in Omro, Winnebago County, on February 11, 1880 and is buried there. The children of Jeremiah LOOP and Elizabeth DYGERT were: 1. Andrew LOOP, b. He was born September 15, 1813, in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY. Near 1837, he married his first wife, Clarissa COLLISTER, in St. Lawrence County. She was born October 6, 1820 or 1821, in Russell, NY, the daughter of Arba COLLISTER and Rachel STEWART. Vanransler was called "Rant" and Clarissa was called "Clarissy". They lived in a log cabin in the southern part of Russell Township, called Belleville. In the 1840 census of Edwards, St. Lawrence, NY, Vanransler is listed as being involved in trade and manufacturing, not in agriculture. In the 1850 census of Russell, he is listed as a farmer. Their three oldest sons went off to fight in the Civil War, all three returned. Clarissa died March 7, 1870 in Russell, NY, "in her 50th year." About 1870, Vanransler remarried to Susan Wooley DYGERT, who was born in October, 1838. He died January 4, 1896 in Edwards, NY. He and his first wife are both buried in Belleville Cemetery, Russell, NY. The children of Vanransler LOOP and Clarissa COLLISTER were: + 1. Spellman LOOP, b. He was born October 15, 1816, in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY, m. Josephine STEELE at Spragueville [?], NY. She was born about 1822, in Massachusetts. They moved to Wisconsin about 1864. She died about 1891. Russell LOOP died April 30, 1891, at Kaukauna, Outagamie, Wisconsin. Family myth says Russell was a doctor. But the 1850 and 1860 census records list him as a farmer, so it is unlikely that he was a doctor. They had one child: 1. George Lafayette LOOP, b. October 23, 1847, in St. Lawrence County, NY, d. May 11, 1920, in Seattle, King, Washington. He served in the 9th NY Cavalry as a bugler, participating in the battles of Bull Run, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor. He was wounded March 30, 1864. He was living in Wisconsin in 1873, subsequently moved to Bessemer, Michigan. By 1908 he was residing in Seattle, Washington. He was a physician, and during World War I supposedly served as doctor on a battleship that went to the orient. He married and had at least two children: a. Frank Roy LOOP, b. He was born about 1818 in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY. He came with his parents when they moved to Madison County, about 1835. He married Lucy Jane HORNER, December 27, 1839, at Lenox, Madison, NY. She was born January 3, 1819, in Monroe County. By trade he was a carpenter and joiner. Their first child was born in St. Lawrence County in 1840, but it is not clear if they ever took up residence there, as their second child was born back in Madison County in 1845. Their third child was born in Monroe County in 1847. By 1854, when their fourth child was born, they had settled in Cattaraugus County, where they lived in a house next to the train station in Little Valley. When the Civil War broke out, David and his son George both joined the 9th NY Cavalry. Neither of them returned. David LOOP was killed in combat at Shepardstown, Jefferson, West Virginia August 24, 1864, while carrying a wounded man from the battlefield. He is buried in the Rural Cemetery, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, NY. Sometime after 1865, his widow Lucy moved to Mason City, Iowa, to live with her son Charles. She died there February 5, 1911. Charles Fletcher LOOP [David(7), Martin(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was the tenth child of David LOOP and Sally FLETCHER. He was born June 7, 1825, in Russell, St. Lawrence, NY. He came to Madison county with his parents in 1835. He probably did not return to St. Lawrence County when his parents returned there about 1845. At least he is not censused with them in 1850. On April 12, 1852 or 1853, he married Sarah J. LOOMIS. She was born in Wampsville (in Lenox Township), Madison, NY, on March 3, 1825. Family tradition says that he was a minister, but that needs to be confirmed. They moved to California sometime between 1860 and 1900. He died at Pomona, Los Angeles, CA, on March 24, 1900. She died there on February 1, 1906. They had at least three children: 1. He was born December 24, 1821, at Solon, Cortland, NY. He went by "Asa". His family moved to Cattaraugus County, about 1839, and settled in Dayton Township in that county. There he married Cordelia MILK, about 1843. By 1849 they had moved to Hubbard, Dodge County, Wisconsin, and were living next door to Asahel's father and brother. They were all farmers. Asahel and Cordelia appear to have moved back to Cattaraugus County, NY, however, as in 1853 and 1855, they sold land in Cattaraugus County to Charles MILK, in which latter transaction they are listed as being "of Dayton, Cattaraugus County", and in 1857, they bought land from Asahel's father, and again are listed as "of Dayton". Asahel moved to California about this time and Cordelia died near 1858 possibly on the way out to California. About 1858, Ashahel LOOP married his second wife, Caroline E. CATLIN, in Suisun City, Solano, California. In 1860 they were living in Napa County. He died in Tulare County, California, February 20, 1892. The children of Asahel LOOP and Cordelia MILK were: 1. Eliza Jane LOOP, b. about 1849, in Wisconsin. 2. Olive LOOP, b. about 1853, in New Jersey (according to the 1860 census). 3. Julia LOOP, b. about 1858, in California. The known child of Asahel LOOP and his second wife Caroline CATLIN (there are likely other children) was: 4. George W. LOOP, b. about 1860, in California. He was born May 21, 1824, at Solon, Cortland, NY. His family moved to Cattaraugus County, about 1839, and settled in Dayton Township in that county. He probably moved with his father to Wisconsin about 1845. About 1847, probably in Wisconsin, he married Sarah (Sally) ALLEN, who was born about 1828 in Ohio. Her mother, Rachel ALLEN, was born about 1794 in Massachusetts. David LOOP died March 28, 1891, at Omro, Winnebago, Wisconsin, and is buried at Iola in that county. They had at least one child: 1. He was born February 25, 1827, at Solon, Cortland, NY. His family moved to Cattaraugus County, about 1839, and settled in Dayton Township in that county. He moved with his father to Wisconsin about 1845. He is censused in Hubbard, Dodge County, Wisconsin, in 1850, living with his widowed father. He was a farmer. In January of 1851 or 1852 he married his first wife Catherine NIVER, the daughter of John NIVER and Sally CAMERON. The wedding took place in Iron Ridge, Dodge County, Wisconsin, where they settled. She died July 22, 1862, at Iron Ridge, and is buried there. On May 11, 1864, John married Emma NIVER, the sister of his first wife. She was born September 11, 1864, in Iron Ridge. He had received it while making a charge during the siege of Petersburgh. At the end of the month he reported back for duty with his regiment. Anthony Lupe, 20010-20010-00 Jacob Lupe, 00010-20010-00 +++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Mary Loop - To answer your first question, we know that Capt. Peter Loop had a son Benjamin born February 28, 1783. But we do not know for sure that he is the Benjamin who shows up in Ontario. 2. Now for your second question: Gerlach Loop had a son Christian, but that is not the Christian Loop who is Capt. Peter Loop's father. I certainly hope Hank Jone's book doesn't have Gerlach as Capt. Peter's grandfather or I may never get rid of that myth. 3. Mary Loop also informed me that The house of Philyer Loop (1777-1822) is still standing in Alburg, but just barely. It is apparently in bad condition and the owner is considering tearing it down. Unfortunately, when I visited Alburg a few years ago, I didn't know the house was still around or I would have photographed it. 4. A couple of you have asked for back issues and they will be forthcoming. I'm going to wait a couple more weeks to have the copies made, so be patient. I'm not planning to skip the country with your money, or anything like that. 5. Roger Joslyn - in a report to Jim Fry (resource number 82, Chautauqua County Surrogates Court) you cite a Judgment Docket John Townsend vs. Henry Loop and Amas Gilson, and say "File not consulted". When I was at the courthouse I found that judgement, but couldn't find any more than what you had recorded. Nor could any of the clerks there. Was there somewhere I could have looked to find more information on this judgment? 6. Marilyn Loop asks if anyone lives near enough to Sussex County, New Jersey to look up land records there for Christian Loop. I don't think so, but I plan to make a journey down there sometime this year. My brother-in-law and family live nearby in Bergen County, so I'll declare a family visit and sneak off (as usual) to do genealogy. Actually, you might contact Roger Joslyn, who lives in New Windsor, NY, if you are interested in paying for this research. Roger is a professional genealogist. I have no idea if he would be interested in this particular assignment or what his fees are, but it can't hurt to ask. 7. Vola Carter submitted all the Iowa vital records presented above. Thanks Vola. I assumed the town in question in "Hopkinton", as I could not find a Hopington on any of my maps, and Hopkinton is in Delaware County. Please correct me if this is wrong. 8. Bess Olson reports that the museum in Shelton, Washington, is putting together an exhibit devoted to Herbert Vivenzo Loop (her grandfather) and his family. She has donated many family history items to the museum for the exhibit. He was the school superintendent for Mason County for 30 years. His autobiography appeared in past issues of the Loop Scoop. 9. I am very indebted to Janet and Lloyd Loop for the raw information that I needed in writing the parts of this month's article dealing with David Loop and his descendants. The information is found, of course, in their book "Descendants of Dr. David Loop". You will notice, by the way, that I do not believe that David Loop was a doctor. I believe that the title was given to him by Dr. Carol Valentine, the quack genealogist who has caused us all so much grief in our struggles to disentangle the Loop's.
